FISHING GRAYLING COUNTRY
We are thrilled to finally offer a fantastic Grayling fishing experience on the Lainio river, it's tributary streams and surrounding lakes, offering some of the most exciting and varying waters and fly fishing ever in a Grayling package.
The Lainio river is famous for it's big Baltic Salmon but it is trully one of the most abundant Grayling waters with strong wild stocks in the world hosting average size fish of 1.5 - 2.5 lbs with many fish 3 - 4lbs and some trophy fish ranging in the 4-6lbs class.
A Lainio Safari Grayling package includes superb apartment / lodge style accommodation overlooking a Trout and Arctic Char lake available for guests, fully catered from the main guest lodge situated just 5km from the main stem Lainio river, of which there is 32km double bank to explore via cars, hiking or rafts.
In addition to the main stem river there are a number of small tributary streams and creeks full of Grayling and Trout to explore as well various lakes that are also available to fish during your stay. There is a wide array of waters and scenery to enjoy, deep in the heart of Swedish Lapland.
As an added bonus, our licensing system on the Lainio river also includes fishing for Baltic Salmon, so come prepared for anything, you might just get lucky!
Pinetree Lodge lake side apartments feature a very spacious living room / lounge area with stunning forest views overlooking a beautiful forest lake. As part of the living room there is a sofa area, dining table, log burning stove and modern fitted kitchen with fridge freezer. There are 2 large twin bedrooms in each apartment that can be use as twins or singles and a modern bathroom shower. There is also a sofa bed that can be used for additional guests. Additional guests can stay at £20 pp a day.
The main lodge is just a short walk from the apartments, featuring a dining room for up to 60 guests, bar & lounge. The Camp Onka fishing grounds are 30 – 60 minutes away depending on which beat you will fish and which side of the river you will access it from. After a long hard day on the water battling the elements, guests can return to the lodge to wind down in an invitingly warm, dry & clean environment.
Before dinner you can enjoy a drink/beer in the lounge bar and then sit down in the restaurant for a good Lapland style meal made from local produce. The dining room has a full view of the lake filled with Trout, Grayling and Arctic Char available for guests to use if a change of fishing dynamics is required for a short while. Breakfast is included by the lodge daily and you can either arrange a pre packed lunch at £10 pp a day and have a 2-course dinner in the restaurant for £30 pp a day or choose to self cater and keep the engine running while searching for our famous Baltic Salmon.
The main lodge and arctic living apartments all have wifi. The apartment accommodation also has a large hallway with hooks to hang waders and jackets and a shoe rack for boots to dry, if the weather is good you can also dry clothing and equipment outside.
Single hand rods in 9'0 #4 and 10'0 #5 are the favourites, however 8'6" #3, 9'0 #4, 9'0 #5, 9'0 #6, 10'0 #6 are all good. Switch rods in 11'0 #5 and 11'0 #6 class can be great for anglers who struggle with single handers or want to target species at longer distances or from tighter areas. Double hand rods in 13'0 #8, 14'0 #9 and 15'0 #10 can be worth having if you wish to target the Baltic Salmon
Weight forward lines in the correct weight class for the rod you are using. Floating, Float Intermediate and Full Intermediate are all worth having depending on the situation you are presented with. Heavier flows in the main stem river may require heavier lines if you like fishing streamers or nymphs at distance or in deep pools. For salmon we recommend versi tip lines or shooting heads from floating down to S3.
LEADERS & TIPPETS
6-9 feet tapered leaders with 3-6 lbs breaking strain. We often use straight mono from tippet spools for shorter leaders including Nylon and Fluorocarbon depending on the water column we are trying to fish in. Salmon tapered leaders should be 12-17 feet in length and typical breaking strain of 15-30lbs either Nylon or Fluorocarbon.
GRAYLING & SALMON FLIES
The most effective method is nympthing in classic colours, pink and purple seem to do very well in any conditions. Grayling regularly take streamers large or small, classic dry patterns in some cases and some of the best action comes from foam skaters in riffled water. Popular Salmon flies include: Banana - Phatakorva - Sunray Shadow - Monkey - The Usual - Willie Gunn - Black & Green - Black & Yellow - Grey & Green - Cascade - Rapala - Editor - Thunder & Lightning - Kinermony Killer - Beiss
Layers are definitely the key! You will need warm underwear and thick socks, wool/merino wool is best. A warm hat and a warm down or primaloft jacket will be needed for the cold nights and mornings, waders and a wading jacket or any other type of shell jacket.
Mosquito spray or roll on mosquito repellent such as "Jungle Oil" or "Mygga" is strongly advised. A wading staff is always good to have on hand, a life jacket is advised for guests who require the extra security and don't forget your camera to capture the special moments!

DISTANCE TO KANGOS TOWN
5 - 10 minutes drive - 7.4 kilometres / 4.6 miles
FOOD & DRINKS
Pinetree lodge offers a fantastic restaurant service three times a day, breakfast, lunch & dinner that is highly recommended. Kangos is a small town with one small convenience store next to the Kangos Bridge over the Lainio river offering basic food and drinks. A small café and some guesthouses also offer tea, coffee and cakes. There is also special local place selling wild Reindeer, Moose and Arctic Char from the region, which you can find at the following address: Norra Byavägen 3, 98063 Kangos.
45 / 60 minutes drive away from Kangos there is also Pajala town that has 2 supermarkets, restaurants, alcohol store, tackle shop, ATM’s etc. Alternatively if you would prefer to have a self catering option throughout the week, we would recommend that guests head into Kiruna town to supermarkets to stock up on supplies for the week. There COOP Konsum large supermarket and Gas station 5/ 10 minutes drive from the airport when taking a left at the exit that is the closest and best option to do this.
There is a fueling staion directly across the road from the local convenience store in Kangos. The pumps each have card machines to pre pay before pumping. We recommend that hire cars fill up in Kangos before heading back to Kiruna airport. You can fill the car up before returning the veichal either at the airport or at the edge of Kiruna town. It is generally a lot cheaper to fill up in Kiruna and only 5 – 10 minutes away.
Sweden’s laws on alcohol prohibit general stores from selling drinks with more than 3.5% alcohol in, but light beers are available to buy from the store in Kangos town. If you would like to purchase alcohol for your stay there is a bar and lounge at the lodge where you can purchase daily or you can choose to shop in Kiruna town before coming to the lodge, or alternatively during the week you can goto Pajala Town 45 / 60 minutes drive away. Both towns have a specific alcohol store called “Systembolaget” where you can buy anything you may want.
Sweden generally is a little more expensive than the UK, we would estimate that food, drinks, alcohol would be more or less 50% more than usual. The local currency is SEK Swedish Kroner however 99% of any purchases are all accepted via credit card. You may need cash for independent stores or individual services. Pinetree Lodge, Kangos town gas station, Kangos town store and Kangos wild meat vendor all take card payments. Breakfast is included at Pinetree lodge with your accommodation booking, Lunch is £10 pp a day and a 2-course dinner is £30 a day.
All services are covered at the lodge, however for any guiding services we would recommend a daily tip of around £20 / 200 SEK or £100 / 1000 SEK a week per guest.
