FISHING JOCKFALL FVO
Fishing the Kalix river at Jockfall is our most challenging Baltic Salmon fishing experience. This is big river fishing on steroids with huge pools filled with the toughest and most aggressive salmon Sweden has to offer.
The very nature of the Kalix river is wild and and extreme, gauging out rough and rigid rock formations that have formed unpredictable banks and fast flowing pools with boils and rocks as far as the eye can see. A dream to any salmon angler that will have experienced the likes of Yokanga or know a good salmon lie when they see one.
Jockfall has 5km of double bank fishing accessible by road or a short hike through the forest lining sometimes requiring a steep decent or climb down to the banks.
The fishing waters are public and therefore are regularly fished by large numbers of locals and tourists. This should not be a deterrent to the avid and adventure seeking salmon angler as when paired with one of our experienced guides or hosts, you will always be able to find somewhere to fish with a great chance of hooking a salmon.
Anglers will be put to the test when accompanied by a guide or host, fishing long hours and sometimes all through the night and morning if it yields the best opportunity of a fish. This is not for the faint hearted but for those seeking the ultimate salmon fishing challenge with the greatest reward.
The season starts on 01 June and this is when the big fresh Springers will be making their way up river alongside returning kelts. Conditions at the start of each season can vary quite dramatically but water levels may be high with water temperatures from 5-10C and occasionally ranging from 10-15C towards the end of June depending on Ice melts / early summers.
Summer begins from late June, early July and this is when the bulk of the MSW fish start to arrive. Fish average 15lbs but there are still good chances of 30lb+ fish. Water temperatures fluctuate from 12-18C and call for floating lines and small flies.
As the season progresses the spring and summer salmon which whose activity will have dropped off during the warmer weeks start to get restless, stirred up by bright silver Osenka winter run salmon who will also be making their way upriver. Water temperatures from 10-15C call for floating and or sub surface lines with small to medium flies in the day and larger flies as the night falls.
The Jockfall apartments are situated a top the Jockfall rapids overlooking the river with stunning views from both inside looking out of the full view windows or sat out on the porch before and after a hard days fishing before retiring to the comfort of these warm and inviting living spaces.
Inside features 3 twin rooms with single beds in each, it's own bathroom/shower, lounge area with wood burning stove, full kitchen with oven, hob, fridge freezer and a dining area adjacent. These apartments are perfect for groups of anglers looking for a self catering option close to the river, with just a short walk to the shop/restaurant if guests wish to take advantage of the food and drinks served from the all day kitchen and bar.
During hosted weeks we would recommend groups of 4 sharing an apartment with 1 - 2 trip hosts who will look after you throughout your stay and hit the river with you during the 24 hour sun that we are blessed with through the early season in June to Mid July.
Wifi is available at the Jockfall Restaurant & Tackle Shop.
Double hand rods from 13-18 feet in class 8-12. Single hand rods from 9-10 feet in class 8-10.
90% of the time we fish full sinking lines in the 1/3/5 class or heavier due to deep and fast water throughout the stretch of river, occasionaly warmer tempertures will warrant floating bellies with veris tips or full floating lines in specific runs where a sunray maybe the ideal weapon of choice. Make sure to bring a wide array of sinking lines that will get your fly fishing fast, bring the heaviest lines you can find for the highest, fastest and coldest water conditions.
LEADERS & TIPPETS
10-20 feet tapered leaders with a tippet range between 0.25mm and 0.52mm. For colder water conditions expect leader lengths to be as short as 4 feet. Tippet from 0.38mm to 0.52mm.
The most important thing is that you believe in the fly! The name and or style of the fly comes second. Make sure you bring flies in sizes from 2cm - 10cm, bigger flies up to 15cm-20cm can be used in early season high and cold water conditions during June. Make sure your hooks are strong and sharp!

Layers are definitely the key! You will need warm underwear and thick socks, wool/merino wool is best. A warm hat and a warm down or primaloft jacket will be needed for the cold nights and mornings, waders and a wading jacket or any other type of shell jacket.
Mosquito spray or roll on mosquito repellent such as "Jungle Oil" or "Mygga" is strongly advised. A wading staff is always good to have on hand, a life jacket is advised for guests who require the extra security and don't forget your camera to capture the special moments!

MONDAY - SATURDAY
Fishing at Jockfall FVO 24 hours a day.
Depart Jockfall 10:00am.
Jockfall is 5km in length double bank both sides of with good access from the main road or via dirt tracks or short hikes and the crossing point for the river is at the top of the beat over the bridge by the Jockfall restaurant & tackle shop.
Fishing times can be flexible to the groups wishes starting early and finishing late, we have prolonged nights throughout the summer where in the early summer the sun never sets and heading into August the light will diminish for a couple hours at most.
There are several fire pits and sheltered areas along the full 5km stretch of water. There fishing directly below the bridge is on a 24 hour rotation basis between fly fishers and spin fishers on each side. The change over time is at 06:00am each morning. The lower boundary for the beat is clearly marked with the start of the next beat named Ansvar, this beat is also available to book via the Jockfall tackle shop.
Drive time between the fishing and the Cabins & Apartments is anywhere from 5-20 minutes as the river is right by the accommodation site. Guests will be able to arrange a schedule/itinerary for fishing hours as we have the luxury of 24 hour sun, your guide will be able to best advise on the best fishing times relative to river and weather conditions. Overcast days with cool water will provide a lot more flexibility in fishing times, but if the water is warm and generally bright sunny conditions, a focused early morning to mid day session may be the best way to go.
If you prefer to head to the river with a lot of gear prepared for all eventualities, we would highly recommend having a day pack bag with all that you may want or need but head out on the water as light as possible, fly box, hooks, leaders, tippets, tools, 1 or 2 different lines, camera etc. The rest can stay on the bank for when you really need it.
