FISHING KANGOS FVO
Explore the vast and majestic flowing waters of the Lainio river across 30km of the Kangos region. Guests will have the opportunity to fish double bank in some of the most remote salmon fishing locations in the world.
Whether off roading or hiking through dense forestry to discover perfect pools on foot or by drift boat, our guests will undoubtedly get to fish pools that have not been fished on the same day. They may not have been fished that week, month or even year!
The Lainio is one of the last untouched wilderness rivers for Baltic salmon fishing and access can be tricky at the best of times. With our driven tours guided or hosted by our fantastic and well experienced fly fishing team, our Lainio Safari tours will provide unforgettable salmon fishing experiences like no other.
The lainio river is a tributary to the Torne river system with as much as 60% of the salmon running the system each year. Our average size is an impressive 15lbs and every year we land numerous fish north of 20lbs, with some lucky anglers reaching the 30lbs and even 40lbs mark.
It is no secret that the Torne river system fish are some of the largest in the world and with fish recorded to 150cm+ each year, perhaps someone will be lucky enough to land a fabled 50lbs+ salmon in the seasons to come. We all dream of that day.
The season starts on 15 June and this is when the big fresh springers will be making their way up river alongside returning kelts. Conditions at the start of each season can vary quite dramatically but water levels may be high with water temperatures from 8-14C.
Summer begins from late June, early July and this is when the bulk of the MSW fish start to arrive. Fish average 15lbs but there are still good chances of 30lb+ fish. Water temperatures fluctuate from 12-18C and call for floatinglines and small flies.
As the season progresses the spring and summer salmon which whose activity will have dropped off during the warmer weeks start to get restless, stirred up by bright silver Osenka winter run salmon who will also be making their way up river. Water temperatures from 10-15C call for floating and or sub surface lines with small to medium flies in the day and larger flies as the night falls.
Pinetree Lodge lake side apartments feature a very spacious living room / lounge area with stunning forest views overlooking a beautiful forest lake. As part of the living room there is a sofa area, dining table, log burning stove and modern fitted kitchen with fridge freezer. There are 2 large twin bedrooms in each apartment that can be use as twins or singles and a modern bathroom shower. There is also a sofa bed that can be used for additional guests. Additional guests can stay at £20 pp a day.
The main lodge is just a short walk from the apartments, featuring a dining room for up to 60 guests, bar & lounge. The Camp Onka fishing grounds are 30 – 60 minutes away depending on which beat you will fish and which side of the river you will access it from. After a long hard day on the water battling the elements, guests can return to the lodge to wind down in an invitingly warm, dry & clean environment.
Before dinner you can enjoy a drink/beer in the lounge bar and then sit down in the restaurant for a good Lapland style meal made from local produce. The dining room has a full view of the lake filled with Trout, Grayling and Arctic Char available for guests to use if a change of fishing dynamics is required for a short while. Breakfast is included by the lodge daily and you can either arrange a pre packed lunch at £10 pp a day and have a 2-course dinner in the restaurant for £30 pp a day or choose to self cater and keep the engine running while searching for our famous Baltic Salmon.
The main lodge and arctic living apartments all have wifi. The apartment accommodation also has a large hallway with hooks to hang waders and jackets and a shoe rack for boots to dry, if the weather is good you can also dry clothing and equipment outside.
Double hand rods from 12-18 feet in class 6-12. Switch rods from 11 feet class 5-7. Single hand rods from 9-10 feet in class 5-9.
We suggest coming prepared with shooting heads and or versi tips with variable sinking rates in floating down to the heaviest sinking densities. Most of our fishing is within the floating to Sink 2 range. Depending on water temperatures, depth and speed, it may be necessary to go down to a heavier range of multi density lines between Sink 1 and Sink 7. We recommend both full length and compact heads for both wide open and short range fishing situations.
LEADERS & TIPPETS
10-20 feet tapered leaders with a tippet range between 0.25mm and 0.52mm. For colder water conditions expect leader lengths to be as short as 4 feet. Tippet from 0.38mm to 0.52mm.
The most important thing is that you believe in the fly! The name and or style of the fly comes second. Make sure you bring flies in sizes from 2cm - 10cm, bigger flies up to 15cm-20cm can be used in early season high and cold water conditions during June. Make sure your hooks are strong and sharp!

Layers are definitely the key! You will need warm underwear and thick socks, wool/merino wool is best. A warm hat and a warm down or primaloft jacket will be needed for the cold nights and mornings, waders and a wading jacket or any other type of shell jacket.
Mosquito spray or roll on mosquito repellent such as "Jungle Oil" or "Mygga" is strongly advised. A wading staff is always good to have on hand, a life jacket is advised for guests who require the extra security and don't forget your camera to capture the special moments!

FOOD & DRINKS
Pinetree lodge offers a fantastic restaurant service three times a day, breakfast, lunch & dinner that is highly recommended. Kangos is a small town with one small convenience store next to the Kangos Bridge over the Lainio river offering basic food and drinks. A small café and some guesthouses also offer tea, coffee and cakes. There is also special local place selling wild Reindeer, Moose and Arctic Char from the region, which you can find at the following address: Norra Byavägen 3, 98063 Kangos.
45 / 60 minutes drive away from Kangos there is also Pajala town that has 2 supermarkets, restaurants, alcohol store, tackle shop, ATM’s etc. Alternatively if you would prefer to have a self catering option throughout the week, we would recommend that guests head into Kiruna town to supermarkets to stock up on supplies for the week. There COOP Konsum large supermarket and Gas station 5/ 10 minutes drive from the airport when taking a left at the exit that is the closest and best option to do this.
There is a fueling staion directly across the road from the local convenience store in Kangos. The pumps each have card machines to pre pay before pumping. We recommend that hire cars fill up in Kangos before heading back to Kiruna airport. You can fill the car up before returning the veichal either at the airport or at the edge of Kiruna town. It is generally a lot cheaper to fill up in Kiruna and only 5 – 10 minutes away.
Sweden’s laws on alcohol prohibit general stores from selling drinks with more than 3.5% alcohol in, but light beers are available to buy from the store in Kangos town. If you would like to purchase alcohol for your stay there is a bar and lounge at the lodge where you can purchase daily or you can choose to shop in Kiruna town before coming to the lodge, or alternatively during the week you can goto Pajala Town 45 / 60 minutes drive away. Both towns have a specific alcohol store called “Systembolaget” where you can buy anything you may want.
Sweden generally is a little more expensive than the UK, we would estimate that food, drinks, alcohol would be more or less 50% more than usual. The local currency is SEK Swedish Kroner however 99% of any purchases are all accepted via credit card. You may need cash for independent stores or individual services. Pinetree Lodge, Kangos town gas station, Kangos town store and Kangos wild meat vendor all take card payments. Breakfast is included at Pinetree lodge with your accommodation booking, Lunch is £10 pp a day and a 2-course dinner is £30 a day.
All services are covered at the lodge, however for any guiding services we would recommend a daily tip of around £20 / 200 SEK or £100 / 1000 SEK a week per guest.
Arrive at Pinetree Lodge 16:00pm.
On arrival at Pinetree Lodge you will be greeted by the staff who will get you settled into your accommodation. If you have booked a guide or host they will meet you and brief you on your weeks fishing and answer any questions you may have. They will be your contact for the week to help you on and off the river.
MONDAY - SATURDAY
Fishing at Kangos FVO 24 hours a day.
If you have booked a guide or host they will help coordinate with you about fishing times and locations on the river.
You can also make use of our in depth digital fishing guide of the Kangos FVO region, with satellite depth imaging of the river, roads and paths to the fishing spots and recommendations on how to fish the pools in numerous water and weather conditions.
Depart Pinetree Lodge 10:00am.
Kangos FVO is 32km in length double bank both sides of with good access from the main road via dirt tracks or short hikes and the crossing point for the river is in Kangos town over the Kangos bridge a short drive from Pinetree Lodge. A row boat is allowed on the whole stretch and best used with an anchor and rope to comfortably fish through pools or to travel from pool to pool when exploring the river.
Fishing times can be flexible to the groups wishes starting early and finishing late, we have prolonged nights throughout the summer where in the early summer the sun never sets and heading into August the light will diminish for a couple hours at most.
There are several fire pits and sheltered areas along the full 32km stretch of water and the safest landmark to exit the river with the boat is the Kangos bridge. There is fishing below the bridge that is considered to be very good and you may use the Kangos FVO river map to determine boundaries.
Drive time between the fishing and the lodge is anywhere from 5-60 minutes as the river is right by the lodge and fairly central to the beat location. Guests will be able to arrange a schedule/itinerary for fishing hours and meals times on arrival as we have the luxury of 24 hour sun, your guide will be able to best advise on the best fishing times relative to river and weather conditions. Overcast days with cool water will provide a lot more flexibility in fishing times, but if the water is warm and generally bright sunny conditions, a focused early morning to mid day session may be the best way to go.
If you prefer to head to the river with a lot of gear prepared for all eventualities, we would highly recommend having a day pack bag with all that you may want or need but head out on the water as light as possible, fly box, hooks, leaders, tippets, tools,1 or 2 different lines, camera etc. The rest can stay on the bank for when you really need it.
